Lower Back Tattoo Designs

Tattoos on the lower back or spine of a woman are extremely popular. What makes the lower back such a popular spot for having a tattoo?
There are several reasons. The area has smooth curves and an attractive look that also provides a great surface for tattooing. There’s plenty of space, even on a small girl, for any size of tattoo.

It’s also sexy without being too overtly promiscuous, and can be hidden easily by clothing when you want it to be. Designs in this location don’t stretch or age with changes in your body size or condition, so they retain the shape and the colours more easily than tattoos on other parts of the body.

A tattoo on the lower back is flattering and interesting. Lower back tattoo designs are created to flatter that distinct hourglass female form, often in horizontal designs that are larger in the middle and taper toward the sides, following the natural curves on either side of the spine.

A delicate butterfly, a sunburst, an angel or a climbing vine – whatever design you choose will often remain hidden, but then be exposed just over the waistline of your favorite jeans, or will make that appealing statement when the summer months arrive, and it shows above your bathing suit or shorts.

The recent popularity of low cut jeans and shorts and shorter tops has increased the popularity of lower back tattoos, sometimes called by the slang, “tramp stamp.”

Many women want their design to have a special meaning or be symbolic in some way. Certainly some will choose a design, such as a lotus blossom or a bird with spread wings because they like the symmetry. They may choose a garland or butterfly for the colours.

But other designs may have deeper meaning. For example, the lotus flower designs often feature a bud, a seed pod and a blossom which can represent the past, the present and the future. Flowers in general represent femininity, beauty and fertility in many cultures, and in other cultures, animals are the symbols of fertility.

A spiral design, especially an upwardly spiraling design, represents total consciousness of all that is around you, and can also represent Shakti, or the feminine energy in the universe, said to be concentrated at the base of the spine. So this makes it a spiral or chakra a perfect lower back tattoo design.

The serpent or the dragon symbolize a little bit of trouble or danger, making them perfect choices for the lower back tattoo design. The lion, by contrast, sends a message of courage and pride, and the eagle speaks of reaching great heights and a connection to something greater than yourself or humanity in general.

A bird, especially a hummingbird, a dragonfly or a butterfly combined with small flowers and creeping vines combine for a beautifully feminine and interesting design which many will consider sensual as well.

Other popular lower back tattoo designs include hearts, celtic crosses, fairies, runes, sun, moon or stars.

Whatever lower back tattoo design you choose, it will draw attention to the fact that you are seeing a part of a woman’s body that is usually covered, making it sensual and feminine.
